Words to Live By Wednesday: Live for Today

They say: “Better late than never”… so here goes… Words to Live By Wednesday (on Thursday).

“Cherish your yesterdays, and dream your tomorrows, but most importantly, don’t forget to live your todays.” ~Author Unknown

These words could never be truer and are so poignant to the experiences I had this week. I found out that our world lost a truly fabulous person this week. A friend of mine from yesteryear, Dan Fellegara, was tragically killed in an accident in NYC over the weekend. I hadn’t spoken to Dan since we worked together at Abbotts Frozen Custard (the greatest ice cream place on the planet) back when I was 15 and 16! But Dan was well known around my town as an incredibly nice and funny person. He was smart, athletic and compassionate and it seems that he continued to be so as he grew older. The world lost a good one this week, but heaven gained a great angel for sure!

I also spent the day with one of my best friends in the hospital earlier this week as her fiancé (and friend of mine as well) underwent brain surgery to remove a cancerous tumor on his frontal lobe. This time spent in the hospital gave me some perspective on just how fragile life is and how important it is to live every moment to the fullest. My friend and I spent the day distracting ourselves during the surgery by scanning pages of a bridal magazine and dreaming of her future wedding. Our friend came through his surgery like a champ and is continuing to make everyone laugh and smile as he starts on his journey to recovery.

Everyday brings its struggles and triumphs. It is important to not get caught up in the nitty gritty of everyday and to take time to focus on the great things in life that you are thankful for and cherish. I can’t wait to continue to live my todays and dream for my tomorrows and cherish my yesterdays! In fact, at the current moment, I can’t wait to dream of a few weeks from now when Frank and I get to take our first real vacation—to Barbados!!

Enjoy your week everyone!

Words to Live By Wednesday: The Beauty of Love

This week’s Words to Live By post also serves as a “sneak peak” at the gorgeous wedding of Karissa and Kristin that took place this weekend in Brookline, MA. I found myself mesmerized and “caught up” in  the beauty of the love that this fabulous couple shared and felt so blessed to have been a part of capturing the beauty of their special day!

Making the day even more special was being able to support equality in marriage and embrace the progress that the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has made in becoming the first state in the United States to allow and recognize gay marriage. Bravo Massachusetts, and Congratulations to Karissa and Kristin for becoming wives! Here’s to many more years of happiness and love! Can’t wait to see you ladies on Friday for your preview session! Full blog to come with more captivating images from the day! xoxo- Kiera

See for yourself all of the fun we had and the love that they share! So beautiful!

I couldn’t be more honored to be there to celebrate their big day! Can’t wait to share more beautiful images!

Today’s Tip: What to Wear For Your Portrait Session

One of the most common questions I get for every photo session is: What should we wear? I am certainly not a fashionista by trade, but I know what looks good and have spent some time researching ways to help you figure out what to wear on the day of your shoot with me. I also am a fan of working with what you have, and not making you run out and buy all new coordinating outfits (although, if it’s in your budget and you need an excuse, blame the shopping spree on me!)

Here are the most helpful tips I have found:

1) Start by choosing one person’s outfit first:

If you are planning a family portrait session, choose an outfit for the most difficult person to dress (the one with the least amount of clothes or the hardest one to pick an outfit for). In my family– I’d be this person.

2) Next plan the remaining outfits for the group around this first outfit:

Find a common theme throughout the first outfit and extend it through the remaining outfits. Say you have chosen a basic Purple dress as your foundation outfit. The best move would be to find ways to put purple accents in the remaining outfits, whether it be shoes, hair accessories, striped shirts, skirts or tights. You can also add to this theme by finding complimentary colors like yellow, grey or pink or blue. Try keeping the outfits all in a similar pallet.

3) Don’t worry about matching everyone exactly. Just try to plan your outfits around a similar theme that blends well together.  By not matching exactly, your photograph will have more depth and character.

4) Embrace your personality and style and find a way to coordinate amongst the family. Also plan for the weather and if necessary, dress in layers to ensure that you aren’t too cold or too hot during your session.

5) Remember to think about your hands and feet. I love photographing the family’s shoes and close details of the hands to add new perspective to portraits. Don’t forget to pay attention to these details as well when preparing for your shoot.

6) Most importantly:  Be comfortable- if you aren’t comfortable, it will show in your photographs. If your little one hates to wear dresses and you put her in a dress, she will make sure to show you her distaste throughout the photo session. Try not to wear clothing that is stiff, itchy, or constraining. This will allow you to move freely and comfortably during your session.

Finally- feel free to send me a picture of your outfits before hand. I’d love to help you out along the way. You can email me the ideas or even send me a picture message via text to my phone. Bottom line, I want you to feel comfortable and have a fantastic experience. I will do everything I can to help make this happen! Can’t wait to see your looks!
